The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) recommends 45 hours of instruction plus 22 hours of practice in order to be fully prepared for the practical test.
Everyone learns in different ways and at different rates so this is taken only as a guide.
At RDT lessons are tailored specifically to your needs and we will not sell more lessons than are required for you to be test standard.

Intensive Driving Course:
Price on application depending on number of hours required determined after assessment drive.
Refresher Course:
You may be a fully qualified driver but perhaps haven’t driven for a while or perhaps there are certain areas of your driving where you lack confidence. Maybe you would like to refresh your motorway driving skills or parallel parking skills.
(These hours can count towards PassPlus Certificate should you wish to complete it at a later date)
Pass Plus Certificate:
This is available to fully qualified drivers. You must complete a minimum of 6 hours additional training. There is no test. Your instructor will sign to agree that you have reached the required standard for the different modules and the DVSA will issue your Pass Plus Certificate. This sometimes can lead to cheaper car insurance dependant on your insurance provider. The 6 hours can be split across a long period of time.
How Pass Plus training works
Pass Plus training takes at least 6 hours. It has 6 modules, covering driving:
- in town
- in all weathers
- on rural roads
- at night
- on dual carriageways
- on motorways
All modules should be practical sessions, although local conditions may mean some are theory based. You’ll normally spend at least 5.5 hours driving.
You will not take a test but you’ll be assessed throughout the course by your instructor. To pass you’ll have to reach the required standard in all modules.
